Joel Vance, author of Billy Barnstorm – The Birch Lake Bomber, is a veteran of 21 years as a writer with the Missouri Conservation Department. He has freelanced since the 1960s and has won many writing awards, including the Outdoor Writers Association of America Excellence in Craft Award and also that of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. He is a past president of the Outdoor Writers Association of America, has been honored with all three of its major awards (one of only three members so honored in the nearly nine-decade history of the organization, and has been the group’s historian).
Vance speaks to a variety of groups on conservation and the environment. He has seven published books. He and his wife Marty live on 40 acres of woods on a dead end road in central Missouri. Wild turkeys are their nearest neighbors.
